"I shall add that from the perspective of a font tool maker (FontLab), I think I prefer if bugs manifest themselves loud rather than semi-silently. The permissiveness of various inconsistencies within SFNT (due to the long evolution of the format) is only superfcially beneficial. In reality, this tolerance for bugs hurts the industry rather than helps it — the bugs amass and there is not enough pressure to fix them. When OTS first came around, I hated its guts because it caused me more work. But I see now that in the longer run, it saves me work, because buggy code had been finally fixed. So I welcome this direction, and in fact I won't mind if OTS becomes slightly more restrictive over time. Of course the real problem will potentially be false alarms raised by OTS, but the library has evolved long so it is now a more reliable gatekeeper."
