"The Freedom Box project will succeed or fail on whether it works "without sysadmin". If only trained sysadmins can figure out how to be free, the society won't be free. It's like the early days of the telephone, when they couldn't figure how to scale up the system without having every third person be a trained "Operator"." -- While I am very much a supporter of Freedom Box as an initiative (I've even made a modest contribution to it), this comment is spot on.

This is a very significant development. The assumption of a network is allowing a high-function application to be created for a low-power device by spreading the processing across the network. We'll see more and more applications like this, easily ported and withthe ability to explit open source on the back-end without licensing consequences. This is the cloud that matters.

This is something that is so clearly necessary, both for consumer protection from price gouging and for development of the technology base of society, that the comment by GSMA ("The GSM Association, which represents operators, declared its "disappointment" that the measures were deemed necessary.") clearly markes them out as part of the problem rather than part of the future.

I'm now using these around the house in several places to deliver networked ausio. They have really excellent audio reproduction from such small units, and the fact they include two input channels with both analogue and SP-DIF allows them to be used in electrically noisy places.
