O truly blessed man! He used to repeat the saying of the holy Apostle Paul, 'It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God', and many other sayings from holy scripture, and in this manner he used to arouse our souls by the consideration of our last hour. Being well-versed in our native songs, he described to us the dread departure of the soul from the body by a verse in our own tongue, which translated means: 'Before setting forth on that inevitable journey, none is wiser than the man who considers - before his soul departs hence - what good or evil he has done, and what judgement his soul will receive after its passing'.

On one hand we joyfully exclaim, like John did with joy in his first Letter: "See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are!"; and on the other with bitterness we observe: "The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him" (1 Jn 3: 1). It is true, and we priests experience this: the "world" in an acceptance of the Johannine definition of the term does not understand the Christian, does not understand the ministers of the Gospel. Somewhat because it does not know God, and somewhat because it does not want to know him. The world does not want to know God so as not to be disturbed by his will, and therefore it does not want to listen to his ministers; this could cause a crisis.

O Lord Jesus Christ, for your holy cross, be near me, that you may defend me.

O Lord Jesus Christ, for your blessed cross, be within me, that you may refresh me.

O Lord Jesus Christ, for your joyous cross, be around me, that you may keep me safe.

O Lord Jesus Christ, for your glorious cross, be before me, that you may lead me.

O Lord Jesus Christ, for your venerable cross, be after me, that you may guide me.

O Lord Jesus Christ, for your praiseworthy cross, be above me, that you may bless me.

O Lord Jesus Christ, for your great  cross, be within me, that you may lead me to your kingdom.

Amen.
