Constantin Petcou and Doina Petrescu co-founded aaa (atelier d’architecture autogérée) in 2001. aaa is a research and action platform revolving around urban mutations and the cultural, social and political practices emerging in the contemporary city. Its team has a variable geometry and includes architects, artists, researchers, residents and users of the spaces it creates. In the La Chapelle area of northern Paris aaa has initiated a series of self-managed projects that encourage residents to access and critically transform temporarily misused or underused spaces. This strategy valorises a flexible and reversible use of space and aims to preserve urban biodiversity by encouraging the co-existence of a wide range of lifestyles and living practices. aaa is currently involved in the European Platform for Alternative Research and Action on the City (PEPRAV).

We need to translate from a society of some 'own many goods' onto a society of many 'living well', in a sustainable environment. The issue of the responsibility is central. If the legal responsibility was often spoken about, the moral responsibility, the responsibility of the decision or the action were him much less. The question of the solidarity must be also evoked. In a global world the solidarity must be taken in the sense(direction) of the total.

In the former world language Latin, humus belongs to the same word family as humanus.
Does this mean that the fertility of our earth and humaneness are inextricably interwoven? And doesn’t it sometimes seem that humaneness is vanishing all over the world to the same extent that humus is being eroded?
These questions move me. They hint at links between my rural origins - the childhood in a southwest German village near the Rhine - and my present work. They also give a sense of how crucial it is to connect to that dimension in our existence where everything alive strives for consciousness. This dimension may be called the soul, or, with Paul Klee’s words, the “heart of creation”.
Exploring such interconnectedness seems to be a necessity if we are to become a sustainable civilisation. And this is a genuine creative process. So, are we indeed all artists? Does the state of the world call upon us to become artists?
