In machine learning, computers apply statistical learning techniques to automatically identify patterns in data. These techniques can be used to make highly accurate predictions.

I always get excited when an indie game developer releases a post mortem. A detailed writeup describing how their game sold after launch, along with insights about what did and didn’t work. I currently don’t have any games for sale, but since launching itch.io, the open indie game marketplace, I’ve collected a lot of data from a store’s perspective. Although I’m not one of the larger marketplaces (yet), I still think it’s interesting to see how things grow and what drives purchases. I’ve typically been very open about releasing data about how the site has been progressing. Sadly I haven’t been very consistent so I decided to spend some time learning R and write some scripts to generate graphs for some of my core metrics.

Chinese Android mobile firm and fierce Apple rival Xiaomi has nabbed the third place finish in the world’s largest smartphone vendors just three years after first setting up shop. Beancounters at Strategy Analytics said that the Chinese firm accounted for six per cent of the 320 million smartphones shipped in the quarter from July to September, while Samsung slipped down to 25 per cent from 35 per cent. Top rival Apple also lost some of its share, though it’s still sitting in second place with 12 per cent of the market.

PC-shifters that hung tough in the hope the market would return to growth may have reasons to be cheerful – in certain parts of the world, anyway. Q3 shipment data from Gartner - or at least preliminary numbers that count sales into retailers and distributors, rather than to end-users - climbed 9.6 per cent in EMEA, jumped 4.2 per cent in the US but fell 5.3 per cent in Asia Pacific, the world’s largest consumer of computers.

The task of the Left is to link a politics of militant racial egalitarianism to the language of everyday experience. This becomes much easier in the context of rising class and social struggles in which the appeal for unity has a clear experiential basis. We can see from the example of antifascist organisation how the activation of concrete forms of multiracial unity can pose a different meaning of race. We also saw how anti-racism formed the dominant culture of the antiwar movement, despite a reasonably large antiwar sentiment on the Right, and provided a counterpoint to the demonisation of Muslims. So, if the dominance of a given racial project is decided by the types of situation that are popularly understood as 'racial', and if the Right tends to have the whip hand here, there are clearly resources on this front for counter-hegemonic mobilisation.

As a woman with a diagnosed mental health condition, I’m twice as likely as my non-disabled counterparts to be the victim of a violent crime, including rape. [Source is PDF] I’m also significantly less likely to be violent than my counterparts. And yet, even on FWD (in comments that are unapproved), it’s not rare for people to equate my diagnosis with abuse. It’s not uncommon for me to be sitting in a classroom of people who know that I campaign for disability rights and have talked a lot about the prejudices that face people with mental health conditions and have my classmates talk about how “crazy” people are violent. After learning I was going to this talk, one of my classmates told me that, should she ever murder someone, she’d claim temporary insanity and just spend a few months in care and then be released. All I could think of was Ashley Smith, who threw crab apples at the postman and died in jail.

After the “historic” victory in Scotland for the Scottish National Party (SNP), it was inevitable that the question of Scottish nationalism would re-emerge. Little attention has so far been given to analysing attitudes of nationalist sentiment, making Political Discourse and National Identity in Scotland both timely and necessary, addressing both “elite” and “non-elite” perceptions.
