The US-based enterprise cloud computing firm's strategy aims to change the existing model of costly licence fees in Thailand.Steve Garnett, the chairman of Salesforce for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said the company plans to seek local software developers to sell its cloud computing applications overseas through its online marketplace, AppExchange.

Salesforce requires customer who sell their apps on AppExchange to share 5% of their revenue with the company. Target customers are small and medium-sized enterprises, financial firms and banks, insurance companies and the tech industry.

Mr Garnett said the company's model lets customers pay 20-30% less for services when compared with the current traditional model.

If experts are to be believed, fun and a less-formal working environment is just one part of the story. According to a study conducted by MarketTools Inc in 6,000 organizations, it was found that the use of Chatter, a social tool for enterprises offered by Salesforce.com, allows companies to reduce emails by 32%, meetings by 28%, and improved collaboration by 36%. Respondents also reported an average increase of 49% in finding relevant information quickly and 54% increase in managing customer information better. Initially introduced only to salesforce .com customers, Chatter is now available for free to any person with a business email address through Chatter .com. "It has been our most successful product launch till date with more than 80,000 companies worldwide using it to collaborate within their own private social network," said Steve McWhirter, senior vice president at salesforce.com.

Marc Benioff, CEO, Salesforce.com long seen as the top evangelist for cloud computing, believes it's time to move beyond the cloud to "the social enterprise" where companies rely on public and private social networks and social applications to run their business. Benioff argued that customers and employees are increasingly using social networks like Facebook and Twitter for business tasks rather than corporate Websites, corporate email systems, and private cloud networks.

"This is the defining concept for everyone in our industry over the next few years," Benioff said. "Salesforce.com was born cloud, but we were reborn social."
