'TREC' (Travel Health Related Education and Care) courses are designed for registered health care professionals who are either new to the field of Travel Health Care or wishing to update and expand their current knowledge.

TREC was established in 2000 and is accredited as an approved travel health education provider by the Royal College of Nursing.

The courses were developed in response to the interest in, and need for accessible travel-health care, education and vaccine information. To date, over 3000 nurses and doctors have attended training events. We have received very positive feedback from previous students and strive to maintain our reputation for providing friendly but informative education.

This is a blended e-Learning course. This course takes six months to complete and commences May and November each year. It includes:

Completion of 4 distance learning Units of core material with written assignments including:

- Pre-travel Risk Assessment and Infections I
- Infections II
- Immunisation theory, practice and available vaccines
- Malaria

Attendance of a (compulsory) 2 day residential component in Glasgow at the beginning.

The Diploma in Travel Medicine (DipTravMed) course is delivered through a blended e-learning approach and is completed over one full calendar year. The diploma is provided by the Faculty of Travel Medicine and is awarded to health professionals who successfully complete all three modules of this multidisciplinary course.

The DipTravMed is suitable to health professionals such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists or allied health professionals who are working in a relevant field and wishing to enhance their specialist knowledge

"To provide suitably qualified and motivated health professionals with theoretical and practical knowledge so that they can accurately and safely advise intending travellers on all aspects of travel hazards that may directly or indirectly affect their health and to increase the student’s awareness of the implications of illness in the returned traveller and the effects of travel on the host countries".

BASP are well known by outdoor enthusiasts who require knowledge of first aid in a remote environment, we provide quality training in Outdoor First Aid and Ski Rescue. BASP is also known and respected within the International ski patrol world through the International Ski Patrol Federation (FIPS). We train and grade ski patrollers in the UK and have strong links with the majority of International skiing nations.

We provide First Aid for outdoor users who spend their work or recreation time in a remote or hostile environment. We are approved by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as a First Aid at Work provider. Our courses are particularly suitable for all the British National Governing Body awards NGB's. We run courses of just a few hours like AED (Defibrillation) training, or 2 day Emergency to 5 days for those wishing to train as Ski Patrol or Rescuers who require more advanced (EMT)Emergency Medical Technician training.

The Diving Diseases Research Centre (DDRC) offers training courses designed to provide theoretical and practical experience in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine for doctors. DDRC is one of the busiest hyperbaric units in the UK with a varied clinical caseload in elective and emergency hyperbaric medicine.

Other services provided by DDRC include sports and occupational diving medical assessments and training courses for the recreational and commercial diver. DDRC also undertakes research into diving and hyperbaric medicine. Given this environment, DDRC is ideally placed to provide training in diving and hyperbaric medicine to doctors.

Programme overview:
Providing clinical care in remote locations has its own unique challenges and requires specialist knowledge and skills. This course delivered online at a distance, provides an opportunity for practising remote health professionals to gain a postgraduate qualification in this emerging specialty.

Programme aims:
The main aim of the programme is to provide health professionals working in remote, and in some instances potentially hazardous, locations the knowledge and skills to operate effectively in this environment using an evidence based approach.

5 Day Course

The main objectives are to make practitioners aware of:

The role of practitioners in protecting the health of the traveller;
Major risks associated with travel;
Appropriate methods for reducing and managing travel associated illness and hazards;
Training in risk assessment and communicating risks to travellers;
Communication skills to enhance their abilities as health educators;
The role of information technology in travel medicine.

The primary purposes of the course, will be to familiarise participants with:

- The main causes of blindness in the world
- The clinical presentation and management of the following diseases:
* Trachoma
* Onchocerciasis
* Vitamin A deficiency and Measles
* Ophthalmia neonatorum
* HIV and the eye
* Leprosy
The workshop programme will also introduce participants to the Global Health VISION 2020 Initiative and its implementation through the VISION 2020: the Right to Sight programme.

Eighty percent of blindness in the world is from treatable or preventable causes. The VISION 2020: the Right to Sight Global Initiative is to create adequate eye-care facilities within communities, particularly in underprivileged areas; to develop human resources so well-trained eye-care workers are available; and to implement specific programmes to control the major causes of blindness.
