"She was also, like me, Latina. Or at least, I thought she was. It's only now, as I see her character's full name spelled out in online obituaries, that I realize perhaps she was meant to be Italian. In fact, Charles, who was born Annette Cardona, was of Mexican and Italian ancestry. She certainly looked Latina to me. And at the time I'm recalling — this was the mid-'80s — there weren't too many representations of Latina women on film and TV. Those that did exist were often portrayed as the other, as my women's studies professors might have once put it, pushed to the margins of the narrative."

"Gru needs a shrink ray to complete his plan to steal the moon. So he steals a shrink ray from a topic secret research facility, presumably belonging to another villain. Throughout the scene where Gru steals the shrink ray my jaw was on the floor - the henchmen in the top secret facility are Asian cartoon stereotypes straight out of U.S. World War 2 propaganda. They have monkey-like features, with mouths that split their entire faces, small pig noses, and beady slanted eyes. They are wearing nondescript uniforms that are also evocative of World War 2. [...] ETA: When I wrote this post I assumed the anti-semitic stereotypes on display in Gru and his mother had already been addressed by someone somewhere. However, I haven't found such an article. Suffice it to say, there's a lot wrong with this movie!"

"Another point against the movie; there are absolutely no characters of color in the entire film, either in Real World England or in Wonderland. Considering it is Victorian England and at an upper-class event, the lack of diversity is understandable. But Wonderland is an imaginary world populated by fantastical creatures and characters of all shapes, sizes, and colors. They've got singing flowers and mice with swords, but not a single POC? That's what I call a race-fail."
