In his new chapter titled "Obedient Poodles for God and Country", written for the 10th anniversary edition of the "Cluetrain Manifesto", Christopher Locke aka "Rageboy" mentions this book by Robert Altemeyer. It is about an America wilting under the basilisc gaze of religious right and other individuals following an agenda of moral superiority. It is about the inroad of collective mania into the single minds of each and everyone of us. Sounds like a book you would like to read with a nice cup of tea in a sidewalk cafe. Have fun :)
