Scala is a general purpose programming language principally targeting the Java Virtual Machine. Designed to express common programming patterns in a concise, elegant, and type-safe way, it fuses both imperative and functional programming styles. Its key features are:
Advanced type-system with type inference and declaration-site variance
Function types (including anonymous) which support closures
Implicit parameters and conversions which support the typeclass and pimp my library patterns
Full interop with Java
For more information, see the official Scala Introduction and Scala Documentation.

Scala school was started as a series of lectures at Twitter to prepare experienced engineers to be productive Scala programmers. Being a relatively new language, but also one that draws on many familiar concepts, we found this an effective way of getting new engineers up to speed quickly. This is the written material that accompanied those lectures. We have found that these are useful in their own right.
