Engineering of California's water infrastructure- built to serve agriculture and urban areas- has severely impacted the overall health of these river systems by reducing and altering flows, blocking passage of fish, restricting geomorphic processes by disconnecting rivers from their floodplains, and dewatering wetlands. With the exception of the Cosumnes River, every major river in the Central Valley (Sacramento Valley + San Joaquin Valley) has been dammed in the Sierra foothills over the last 50 years, thus changing the physical face of the Central Valley and altering the ecosystem.
