When I talk about the GNOME ethos that drives us to make things easier for the user, I think about things like this. Think of all the manual steps that have been abstracted away & made better right down the stack to make this work: smb printer sharing, avahi for zeroconf service discovery, cups integration into the desktop... and of course the user interface which completely hides all this abstraction and makes things Just Work.

I don't think I agree with this, but it is an interesting analysis. Author argues that content delivery and applications are the key areas where Linux falls short on the desktop, mostly due to a failure to embrace DRM & codecs. I disagree that the moment has passed, and that the desktop is irrelevant.

GNOME disk utility now includes Palimpsest, a disk diagnostic tool. Very cool looking, hopefully it will help me diagnose the performance issues I've been having on this laptop, or at least eliminate "slow disk drive" from the equation. Other tools I've been using to diagnose performance issues: sar, fio, iotop, iostat, hdparm
