Nice to see that accessibility work is getting funded through GNOME. It's one of the areas that doesn't get much attention but is important for everyone.

Evaluating web pages for accessibility. First step in sensitising people to making the web accessible. Step two is teaching them how to fix the problems they find (providing text alternatives to audio & image content, making a no-flash website version, ensuring links and forms are easily navigable)

I've been following Glenda's blog through the "Accessibility daily" aggregator for a while, and she often reminds me that accessibility isn't about doing things especially for handicapped people, it's about being considerate of their needs when you're doing the same stuff for everyone. This example is great: a hotel has spent lots of money installing automatic door openers for the bathroom, but the beds are too high for someone in a wheelchair to get on easily. Would having lower beds be an accessibility feature? Would it cost anyone else anything?

Willie's explanation of his thought process during recent cuts at Sun, and why he has decided to stay there, warmed my cockles

The details of the GNOME accessibility outreach program. $50,000 will do a lot of good, and bring, I hope, a great many new developers into the project with an awareness of accessibility.
