The days of laboriously reading a document on a mobile device by "pinching and squeezing" and scrolling side to side are coming to an end. To help consumers easily read documents and educational materials, IBM is standardizing on EPUB as its primary packaged portable document format, making its documentation and content more accessible on any mobile device. This allows any user – including people with speech, hearing or vision challenges – to have a more personalized experience with the content. UMASS Boston logo EPUB is an open standard format for digital publications developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum and makes use of open web technologies (HTML5, WAI-ARIA, SVG, and MathML) that will enable IBM to deliver a richer user experience and more inclusive access to digital math, interactive documentation, complex layouts and charts. It also works easily with assistive technologies, such as screen readers.

Fortunately, the usability world has been blessed by dozens of new tools over the last couple of years. While many excellent blog posts have been written about these tools, I decided that it was time to take a deeper dive. Most importantly, I wanted to test these tools on User Effect and try to provide real data and screenshots.
In the end, I decided that a blog post just wasn't going to cut it this time around, and so my second e-book was born. I'm happy to announce that I'm making that e-book available for free as of today. It's a guide to 20 online usability tools, all of which have free or low-cost versions.

If reports are correct, Schwarzenegger intends to provide Californian schoolchildren with an ebook reader – a device, such as the Sony Reader or the Amazon Kindle, that can hold the equivalent of 160 books. Such devices, which cost about £200, are light and portable and have screens that are much gentler on the eye than the typical computer screen.
