gnome implementation of freedesktop Desktop Entry Specification. http://freedesktop.org/Standards/desktop-entry-spec

This spec is vague. Let | denote backslash and # denote newline. The Exec key is a single line in a .desktop file beginning with 'Exec=' followed by the command name and arguments separated by spaces. The whole line is of type string, meaning it may contain any ascii characters except newline, together with UTF-8 codes. Backslash escape sequences |s for space, |n for newline, |t for tab, |r for return, and || for backslash are interpreted, apparently before the line is parsed into arguments. Command name may not contain '='. Spaces separate arguments. %F as a single argument expands to selected filenames in separate arguments. The space, tab, newline, backslash, backtick, double and single quote, and "><~|&;$*?#()" characters must be quoted in double quotes, with double quote and backslash escaped using backslash. Also backtick and $. #Exec=bash -xvc "echo ||$0 |$0 $0" %F# prints #echo |$0 $0 $0#+ echo '$0' /path/name /path/name#$0 /path/name /path/name# into ~/.xsession-errors.
