This clear explanation of the hole UK schools have got themselves in with ICT rings true for me. I remember explaining very clearly to the headmaster of a local school why the new infrastructure he was creating in his new school buildings needed to use virtualisation, thin clients and open source software for as much as possible, and then watching him install Windows PCs everywhere. Breaking the self-amplifying lock-in loops that the schools are sustaining is probably the hardest challenge for the technology industry.

The number of spontaneous software freedom activities coming out of India reflects the diversity and drive of the people. This international scheme promotes creative expolration of the potential of ODF - wonderful stuff that I'd encourage school-age students to join in with.
