Show this to every politician: "What we need is security that's effective even if we can't guess the next plot: intelligence, investigation and emergency response. ... The real security failure on Christmas Day was in our reaction. We're reacting out of fear, wasting money on the story rather than securing ourselves against the threat. Abdulmutallab succeeded in causing terror even though his attack failed.

If we refuse to be terrorized, if we refuse to implement security theater and remember that we can never completely eliminate the risk of terrorism, then the terrorists fail even if their attacks succeed."

Calm and rational comment from Schneier as usual. It's time someone in government did the joined-up thinking on this issue and helped us all to switch to a "Keep Calm and Carry On" approach.

Just in case you didn't think the TSA were abitrary enough...

"I learned in Iraq that the No. 1 reason foreign fighters flocked there to fight were the abuses carried out at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo."

Rather over-the-top article about security theatre at US airports.

Excellent explanation of why confiscating pasta sauce and shampoo actually makes us all less secure at the airport.

Schneier is getting better and better at articulating this message. This variant is excellent and well worth keeping handy for when a friend asserts that all the airport security is a nuisance but keeps us safe.

"the photo ID requirement is based on the myth that we can somehow correlate identity with intent" -- Read this if you think ID checks at the airport are "fair enough and make us safer". All they do is protect airline revenue by preventing an open market in tickets.

"The benefits of responsibly publishing attacks greatly outweigh the potential harm. Disclosure encourages companies to build security properly rather than relying on shoddy design and secrecy, and discourages them from promising security based on their ability to threaten researchers. It's how we learn about security, and how we improve future security."

"But sir, how can it not be allowed when it's the same knife they give you on the plane!" Yes, the flight crews suffer the idiotic security theatre just as much as the other travellers and are bullied just as much by the unaccountable TSA.
