"Robert Spearing, 44, and his wife had driven to Chicago all the way from the Province of Ontario just to see Oprah's Farewell Spectacular. But tragedy intervened! The day before the taping, he went to police and told them he'd been mugged by two men ("one African-American and one Hispanic," he said) who stole his tickets to the big show.
"They took him to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for some superficial wounds to his head. But things just didn't seem to add up (e.g. why would two violent criminals want to attend Oprah's Farewell Spectacular?), and after questioning the victim further, the cops suddenly had an Aha!™ Moment: Spearing had no tickets to Oprah's Farewell Spectacular. He never did! And he had no idea what he was going to tell his wife. So he made up the mugging story."

"The 11 and a half minute segment was mostly filled with respectful and sensitive questions that enlighten Oprah’s audience. This is pretty meaningful when you consider Oprah has the highest ratings among older Americans. Nationally, 7.4 million people watch her show daily according to the Nielsen Research Group. The audience is predominantly female, white, and over the age of 55.
"But it’s Oprah. At one point she got folksy and asked one of her ridiculous questions. And demanded an answer."

"Oprah isn't exactly the outdoorsy type, which is kind of the point. Her visit occurred earlier this month, and she and her friend Gayle first stocked up at REI on 'sleeping bags, lawn chairs, water bottles and fanny packs too,' according to one eyewitness account. Her show will feature activities such as fly-fishing and mule riding. During her trip, she commented that she felt closer to God.
"Johnson says the exposure of Oprah's show to an audience of 30 million will be like 'an earthquake' that sends out seismic waves of culture change across the black community. His ultimate visitor to champion the parks cause to the black community, however, would be rap superstar Snoop Dogg.
"'All Snoop Dogg has to do is go camping in Yosemite and it would change the world,' Johnson told the San Francisco Chronicle a year ago. 'If Oprah Winfrey went on a road trip to the national parks, it would do more than I have done in my whole career.'"

"With each delay of OWN's launch -- from 2009 to mid-2010 to January 2011 -- Discovery has had to crunch some numbers and figure out a whole new cost plan.
"We're in the process of revising that contract," Singer said. "[The budget] likely will go up . . . the cost to launch the network, it will be higher than we had originally contemplated."
He declined to specify what the new anticipated total cost will be. Still, Discovery is content with OWN, which it owns 50/50 with Winfrey."

"The women in Oprah's audience are not addressed as mothers, wives, citizens, employees, or (god forbid) activists. They are addressed as selves. In the early aughts, the sociologist Eva Illouz sorted the show's episodes by theme. 'The Failed Self' is its most common subject, followed by 'The Assaulted Self,' with 'Broken Relations' coming in third."

Wow. "Charities and yet-to-be adopted children stand to benefit the most from the enormous estate, while Stedman Graham, O’s partner for the last 21 years, allegedly won’t see a dime."
