"Mr. González also expressed skepticism that the administration would provide less penal settings for immigrants held on administrative, rather than criminal, charges. 'It’s not clear to us whether the new system will really mean that the facility will provide migrants in detention with a system that is fully respectful of human rights,' he said."

"It is too simple to look at the protests at the Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR) and say the student/youth led movement on the island is just about $800. As the American Civil Liberties Union reports, Since the pro-statehood Governor of Puerto Rico Luis Fortuño came into power two years ago, free speech has been under all out assault.
"The report, which calls the situation on the U.S. a colony, a 'human rights crisis' makes special note of how women have been especially targeted by police for physical and sexual assault."

"Is there a place for human compassion and human right in the immigration debate? Is there a place to say–I feel for Pedro as a human being and I don’t want him or his family to suffer in this manner over an unjust law? I think the way the debate is run today, the answer would be no. Fox news, Michelle Malkin, Lou Dobbs–all of the people of that ilk, have made it a sign of weakness, of shame, something to mock, for caring about other human beings who are hurting. And of course, all of the reasoning on why we shouldn’t care about other human beings carry very strong undertones of anti-gay hysteria and nationalism (Oh, wah wah, bleeding heart pussy liberal! Love your country before any human! Weak response! We don’t want to be weak! We want to be manly strong men!)."

"Seventy-seven percent of victims in alleged human trafficking incidents reported in the U.S. were people of color, according to a Bureau of Justice Statistics Report. An example of BJS's ambiguity is that 747 out of 1,442 reported incidents recorded no racial or ethnic origin.
Racism is deeply embedded in human trafficking and must be racially inclusive and explicitly included in its literature, statistics and advocacy. To combat this modern-day slavery, the trafficking cycle should recognize explicitly the connections between trafficking, migration, poverty, racism, gender and racial discrimination."

High unemployment among black Americans means the United States has failed to live up to commitments it made under United Nations human rights agreements, a coalition of advocacy groups charges....The latest unemployment figures show a stark racial disparity. White men were unemployed at a 9.6 percent rate. For black men, the figure was 20.2 percent. Latino men posted a 13. 8 percent rate, Asian men only 7.7 percent. Rates for women followed the same racial and ethnic pattern, but were lower than that for men of the same ethnic group...The UN filing argues that the U.S. has "has failed to meet obligations in the United Nations Charter," and specifically faults the 2009 federal stimulus bill, or American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)."Additionally, the failure of ARRA to target vulnerable populations in job creation does not reflect the government’s obligations under … the International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination."

"[T]hat is where Peta fails. They don’t care when their actions reinforce oppressive systems, they don’t care when their actions cause those of us who don’t agree with those oppressive systems to turn away from campaigns, or even caring about animals. Peta doesn’t view it as pragmatic to care."

"I don't doubt that the phenomenon Okong'o names has merit- racial inferiority complexes are real. But the issue is complex, and I'm not sure if that's the primary factor in driving forward the current Ugandan anti-homosexuality bill. If it were, would we see so much critical rhetoric surrounding Western morals and influence being used in Uganda to promote the anti-homosexuality bill?"

"But as the administration moves to increase oversight within the agency, the documents show how officials — some still in key positions — used their role as overseers to cover up evidence of mistreatment, deflect scrutiny by the news media or prepare exculpatory public statements after gathering facts that pointed to substandard care or abuse."

"Well, when we believe in peace, there is simply no room for complacency. The murders of James Byrd, Matthew Shepard, Jorge Steven Lopez, Marcelo Lucero, Luis Ramirez and countless others who were victims of violent "hate crimes" should be completely unacceptable to every human being; because we're all human beings. It's up to us to change the paradigm."

"Vietnam Brides International has teamed up with Diners Club to offer a payment plan for the women they sell, the first such partnership that I know of. It's basically a layaway plan for human beings, except you get the "product" before you even make the first payment. And when I thought it was not possible for these two companies to objectify and dehumanize these women any more, I read what the Assistant General Manager of Diners Club Singapore had to say about situations where the buyer defaults on his bride payments."
Note: The article has been updated, with a statement from Diner's Club saying they are ending their relationship with Vietnam Brides International. - LDP
