This is a good post about how to build a vibrant and active open source community. I like the reminder to make a list of easy-to-get-started projects. Too often there's a long list of things to do, but they're not really suitable tasks for a beginner. Writing documentation is a great way for someone to get familiar with the project and contribute at the same time.

Stamen Design and SimpleGeo have created a ridiculously easy-to-use JavaScript library called Polymaps which of course reads GeoJSON out of the box. With a few lines of JavaScript you can render shapefiles and start using them without all that pesky XML parsing stuff.

This is a great article by Bostonian Wayne Chung about building a sustainable side project. He applies the lean startup principles of just-in-time development and really digs into the financials including cost of goods sold to see where he can be more efficient. It's very inspiring and makes me want to revisit some of my side projects to see if I can make them sustainable.

Brian Balfour was one of the first guys I met when I started working out of Betahouse. I would echo a lot of what he says in this article - having peer groups makes a huge difference and it's one of the reasons I like living in Boston because there are so many entrepreneurs like me.

Excellent article on the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to hiring consultants.
