Ning launches a new "Apps" feature brining even more Facebook-like integration with other web services and new gadgets. I haven't played with this yet, but it was all the buzz on Twitter for the past two days. :)

I got an email update from this online community... apparently I joined a long time ago... so have seventeen thousand others. Are any of you using this?

Julie Lindsay created this social network for parents and students to learn about digital citizenship. I'll be adding this resource to my Internet Awareness workshops: "Learn about today's social landscape, discover the pressing need for digital citizenship, and act to become better digital citizens."

Here's a free and add free alternative to Ning for creating your own social network. I only poked around but it looks easy and feature rich. And this is a bonus: "GROU.PS is free! You pay nothing. Plus, we don't force you to show your community our brand and/or our ads unless your storage needs exceed 3GB." Thanks to Kevin Jarret for sharing this on twitter.

As an environmentally-focused social networking site, Greenopolis was created to engage users on green issues so that they might learn, explore and participate in an open dialogue about the present and future of our environment."

Many edubloggers linked to this and discussed it. I'm saving it for my reference, too... for my next Internet Awareness workshop. It's Terry Freedman on teen social networking.

Geeky Mom points to Pronetos, "a facebook-like app for sharing research and connecting with scholars." Does this have potential? I haven't tried it, but saved it for later.

Via iJohn Pederson. Wow. "Suddenly, within just the last couple of days, the entire social networking world has announced that they are ganging up to take on Facebook, and Google is their Quarterback in the big game."
