Wow. It's not entirely free, but there's no tuition! "University of the People uses open-source technology, open course materials, e-learning methods and peer-to-peer teaching."

I'm proud of our state for taking this first step, but I'm nervous about where it might (or might not) go. It sure sounds good though: "a state approved list of standards-aligned, open-source digital textbooks for high school math and science" will be developed.

I got an email about this, and I might actually be interested. It seems to address many of the shortcomings of existing CMS platforms (like Blackboard or even Moodle), particularly in its support of ongoing informal learning. It also has built in billing (with paypal) for more formal course offerings. "Sclipo is a social learning network. Use Sclipo to learn, teach and meet people that share your educational interests."

MIT's OpenCourseWare has been around awhile, but this site "Highlights for High School features MIT OpenCourseWare materials that are most useful for high school students and teachers." 'Nuff said.
