I'm back from sunny Los Angeles, where I attended Microsoft's Professional Developer's Conference 2008 this week. The stars of the show were Windows 7, the follow-on to Microsoft's little-loved Vista, and Windows Azure, Microsoft's ambitious new cloud computing service.

Today at its Professional Developers Conference, Microsoft gave the public its first peek at the Windows client release that’s supposed to make up for Vista. Based on our early tests of the new client, we’re impressed with Seven's speed and polish.

Microsoft shows off Windows 7, a less ambitious offering than Vista but one with more realistic goals. With its new features and improved performance, Windows 7 seems like a better version of Vista rather than a major step forward.

Ballmer also said he only gets about 70 pieces of e-mail a day, and that he doesn't have a range of filters controlling that. He also answers most of those e-mails himself, or forwards them to someone who can.

Thank you for promising to release documents, API, etc. It is welcome and laudable, but insufficient.

I would like to see more:
a) Join the Open Invention Network and place ALL of your patents into the common space.
