From the Scout Report: The open textbook movement is in full flower, and curious parties can find topics covering horticulture, engineering, and philosophy scattered across the Internet. This particular website brings together over three dozen college level textbooks from the field of computer science. The site includes computer science textbooks from the Open University in the United Kingdom, the University of Oregon, and a number of other universities. The titles are arranged alphabetically, and they run the gamut from "Accessibility of eLearning" to "XML-Managing Data Exchange". Visitors will note that while not all of the textbooks have been vetted by professional reviewers, those that have been reviewed have a "*" symbol next to their name.

From the Scout Report: Are you interested in reading about "Adventures in Electricity"? Perhaps you'd like to peruse "All Aboard Mr. Lincoln"? These fascinating titles (and 76 others) are available here, courtesy of the University of Nebraska Libraries. This compelling collection contains educational comics created by a raft of different government agencies and other organizations, and they present a rather diverse portrait of the ways in which various topics were addressed in words and pictures over the past seventy years. Some of the more curious items here include "Dragons Visit Earth To Study Food and the Land" (sponsored by the Soil Conservation Society of America in 1984) and "Mark Steel Fights Pollution!"

From the Scout Report: Based at Harvard University, the Mazur Group is headed by Professor Eric Mazur who teaches physics and applied physics. Professor Mazur, his lab colleagues, and students worked to create this website on physics education. The site brings their own research into the classroom experience and provides resources for teaching physics. The "Areas of Research" includes information on collaborative learning via peer instruction, gender differences in introductory physics courses, and the value of classroom demonstrations. Each of these areas contains a brief summary of the Mazur Group's work in each area, and visitors can sign up for updates. Further down on the site, visitors can look through a book on peer instruction (complete with resource material) and the proceedings from a National Science Foundation conference that deals with teaching physics.

From the Scout Report: In recent years, there has been more of a concerted effort to teach educators how to incorporate different learning strategies in the classrooms. For some educators classroom settings may be much more diverse than when they were in college or graduate school, so it is important to offer resources to help make their classroom experience a successful one. The Center for Research and Learning at the University of Michigan has a website that is complete with factsheets and various documents that cover about fifteen different aspects of this process. The headings here include "Approaches/Teaching Methods", "Evaluation of Teaching", and "Scholarship of Teaching". Each section contains materials that have been classroom-tested for their effectiveness and they are ready to be used. The "strategies that anticipate and respond to difficult discussion" is top-notch, and it includes commentaries on managing student resistance and engaging classroom climate.

From the Scout Report: The Center for Civic Education is a non-partisan educational corporation started in 1969 in Calabasas, California, to educate America's citizens about democratic principles. Their website's "About Us" section has a powerful quote by Thomas Jefferson that sums up their rationale and goals for starting the Center: "I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them but to inform their discretion." Visitors will definitely enjoy learning a few civics lessons by answering the questions in the "60 Second Civics" podcasts that can be found on the homepage.
