A year ago I said goodbye to my trusty MacBook Pro and started working exclusively on an iPad + Linode 512. It was an experiment at first - one that I never thought would last.

Twelve months later and I find I’m still working like this. A combination of Vim and GNU Screen for development, Pages for writing, Keynote for presentations, Jump and VNC for unavoidable X windows work, Mobile Safari for web apps and a hefty dose of python scripts to smooth off all the edges. I use it for development, for presentations, for my side projects, for everything.

With the launch of Windows 8 this year, we saw an opportunity to be present in the Windows Store from day one. And because we built the app using cocos2d for iOS which is a native iOS framework, we could not just reuse the code and compile to Windows 8 SDK. Another constraint was the timing. We had only a month to get our app ready and uploaded to the Windows Store. If not we would miss the launch. I will go through some of the choices we made before explaining the final solution.

Now multi-core Android phones can be PCs too. Ubuntu for Android enables high-end Android handsets to run Ubuntu, the world’s favourite free PC desktop operating system. So users get the Android they know on the move, but when they connect their phone to a monitor, mouse and keyboard, it becomes a PC.
