"The app was a favorite of news-junkies and reporters around the world. Even members of the RedCross said they used it to find out about natural disasters before any other channel alerted them. Then in November, Breaking News announced that it had sold control over its wildly popular Twitter account to MSNBC. Today the organization announced that its iPhone app will be shuttered. BNO will now sell access to its news exclusively to the corporate media clients it had originally disrupted with its innovative nearly-free service to consumers."

"When BNO sold control of it's popular Twitter account to MSNBC, the difference was immediately and for serious news-hounds, disappointing. It felt less personal, there was no MSNBC branding on the Twitter account, but a substantial number of the links posted went to that company's site. It was still pretty cool, but not nearly as cool as the independent organization that it had been before."

"Verizon and AT&T are rushing to get it integrated with their existing networks, but the new network is LightSquared will function as “a disruptive force” … “by democratizing wireless broadband services,” the firm’s new Chair and CEO Sanjiv Ahuja said on Tuesday. It is targeted to Best Buy, Walmart and kin and opens the door for TracPhone-like prepaid services an sell interchangeable LTE mobile phones/computers that you can “top up” with any of the branded vendors renting spectrum from LightSquared.

"In addition to pressure on Verizon and AT&T, both cable and satellite TV systems could become collateral damage. LTE has the capacity to deliver both fast Internet and full HD video to computer, mobile or set-top device — almost anywhere in the country."

"LightSquared will offer broadband coverage on a wholesale basis to a range of businesses and entities, including device makers, wireless and wireline network operators, retailers, content providers and more. LightSquared claims to own a national footprint of 59MHz of spectrum in an "advantageous frequency position." LightSquared didn't specify what bands it owns. The company says its network will cover 92% of Americans by the year 2015 and create 100,000 jobs along the way."

"The new open source software, called OpenBlock, will be developed by the non-profit OpenPlans and installed at different-sized newspapers, The Columbia Daily Tribune and the Boston Globe. The Tribune, in Missouri, will use OpenBlock as a stand-alone website. The Boston Globe will test widget integration with their broader digital product suite.

“As city governments make more data publicly available, it creates a need for tools and strategies that citizens can use to derive value from these data sets and improve their communities. Making block-by-block data available on an open source platform improves the accessibility and usability of this information and encourages people to collaborate, communicate and develop applications that enhance their daily lives,” said Nick Grossman, OpenPlans’ director of civic works."

"On Yahoo's front page? Integrated with its services? Try both. Yahoo plans to make Zynga's games available through Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Messenger, its casual-angled Yahoo Games portal, and probably the homepage, too. Looks for the Yahoo's US version to go first, with an international followup.

"Facebook and Zynga announced last week that they were forging a five-year "strategic relationship." This, after rumors that Zynga was planning to breakup with the popular social networking service and forge its own, dubbed 'Zynga Live'. The kiss-and-make-up deal expanded the use of "Facebook Credits" in Zynga games, a sticking point in reportedly "intense" prior negotiations. Zynga apparently balked at Facebook request for 30 percent of credit revenues. According to TechCrunch, Zynga was able to negotiate a better deal and "walked away pleased with the deal," though Zynga Live is probably still in ready-just-in-case mode."

"AOL, which currently outsources search to Google, began negotiating a new search deal last week, CEO Tim Armstrong said yesterday at the D8 Conference out in California.

"Tim is just being coy. AOL isn't negotiating a search deal. It's negotiating a sale.

"A source familiar with Tim and AOL's strategic thinking suggests that an outcome of these negotiations could be AOL's sale to Microsoft."

Groupon going mobile? Hmmmmm....

"The company has purchased Mob.ly, a mobile development firm which has worked on a number of high-profile products, including Yahoo’s Sketch-a-Search iPhone app and OpenTable’s apps for Android and the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre. In a blog post, Groupon—which launched an iPhone app just last month and still doesn’t seem to have an official presence on Android—says the “core” of its mobile team is coming through the deal."
