"Finnish phone maker Nokia had decided to dump its antiquated Symbian operating system for future high-end smartphones in favour of its sleeker, Linux-based MeeGo mobile OS. The first phones to get the MeeGo treatment will be the new Nokia N-series, with the N8 being the very last of its kind to sport the now nearly defunct Symbian before its shoved over to cheaper Nokia devices."

Nokia has lost its overall market share leadership in the worldwide smartphone segment to Apple, based on browser calls for mobile ads.

Why is mobile ad share important? Because in the smartphone segment, the tail wags the dog — apps drive customer loyalty more than hardware features — and Gartner noted in its most recent report on the smartphone market that “services and applications are now instrumental to smartphones’ success.” That report, reflecting first quarter 2009 figures, had Nokia still firmly in the lead. But according to numbers from mobile ad service vendor AdMob, Apple smartphones received 49 percent of ad traffic in May, compared with 32 percent for Nokia.

I suspect this would be a very good thing for service and price, but maybe not so good for phone functionality if AT&T wants to lockdown or cripple anything (as they are wont to do)

Nokia just announced an upcoming firmware update for US N95 users. Note that that's an update for the firmware -- it says nothing about thier clunky PC-only firmware update process except that it doesn't work with Vista for now.
