The more things change, the more they remain the same - so seems to be the case with Steve Jobs & his approach to new products - build a simple, but robust core for the first iteration & then develop it over time. It worked for the Mac, then iPhone & seems to be working for the iPad. The article also touches on the closed Apple ecosystem & Jobs hostility towards flash (apparently similar to the arrow keys on the original Mac)

Not good at all. It goes on to show how dissimilar the dynamics of the mobile phone platform is to the PC. The members of the so called OHA seem to have locked up their contributions. So, is this a failure of open-source\free software?
Apple did make some inroads into freeing up the phone from the operator, but that's a different story. Also goes on to show how much better the Indian telecom market is than the US one (for the time being at least).

Will the iPad transform the netbook\notebook industry the same way the iPhone transformed smartphones? The key may be the fact that the level of openess of the respective platforms before the Apple devices came along.
