Misinformation spreads too quickly via social media, just as news flies, too. This article bought to mind a meme from a couple of years ago stating there had been 10 attempted child abductions in my area which the police had not publicised. A quick call to Sussex Police confirmed it was not true. The force acted by putting out a press release but it took 24 hours to calm down despite repeated tweets by myself and the web editor at Bighton's Argus.
