Prince leaves behind not only a musical legacy, but also a string of Minnesota artists he supported. One of those artists was Gary Hines '74, who first met Prince at Bryant Junior High School in Minneapolis.

Fellow Minneapolis music icon Bob Mould '82 has posted a remembrance of Prince in light of his recent passing. The former Hüsker Dü frontman reminisces on recording parts of his first solo album, Workbook, at Paisley Park in the late ’80s, and recalls seeing him live numerous times throughout the their shared city. “Prince was the brightest star in these Northern skies,” he wrote. “My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow musicians. Prince’s music will give consolation and comfort to the collective grief. Godspeed.” Read Mould’s eulogy.

Danai Gurira is famous for portraying katana-wielding Michonne on the popular zombie apocalypse drama “The Walking Dead.” With the show’s season finale on Sunday (8 p.m. AMC), fans are anticipating the introduction of evil Negan and what he’s got in store for Michonne and the rest of her fellow survivors. But did you know Gurira is a 2001 graduate of Macalester College? She’ll be back in St. Paul at her alma mater on May 14 as a commencement speaker along with Gary D. Hines (a 1974 alum), who is the director and producer of the Sounds of Blackness.
